2018 NAV-X #6 - Cache Creek - Results

2018 NAV-X #6 - Cache Creek - Results

We were lucky to have a beautiful, if hot, day in November to enjoy a new map and location at Cache Creek Natural Area. A course with 53 controls, and a possible 3340 points up for grabs saw competitors employ a lot of different strategies to snag as many as possible. There was plenty of opportunity to also snag some amazing views from a couple different ridgelines.

The 4 hr course saw a lot of competitors come back looking a little worse for wear, having found some of the burnt out areas and rougher controls to get to. It was hard to gauge time on the map, resulting in a lot of competitors getting back late. The competition was tight, with only 40 points separating the top three scores. Reka Zempleni employed a very different strategy in which she was not afraid to skip low point controls, and got high fast and early to snag high value points. It became the winning strategy, with her capturing the most points at 1370. We also saw a family team (Team Fergot) brave a hard course, coming back all smiles!

On the 8hr course Dennis Wilkinson was able to get a total of 2980 points, proving that Andrew set a course that was a little too big to clear in 8hr ;). A lot of competitors broke the 2000 point mark, and everyone was back in time to share stories before it got dark.

Results Highlights:

Highest Scores on the 4hr Course:

  • 1370 Reka Zempleni

  • 1340 Vladimir Gusiatnikov (Get Lost!! Running Racing)

  • 1330 Rex Winterbottom (terraloco)

  • 1220 Daniel Sebo

  • 1070 Gary Carpenter

Highest Scores on the 8hr Course:

  • 2980 Dennis Wilkinson

  • 2530 Lubomir Sebo

  • 2430 Mats Jansson

  • 2220 Marcy Beard

  • 2180 Misha Kreslavsky

A few volunteer recognitions are in order.  Huge thanks also to the following people (in no particular order) without whom this event would not have been possible:

  • Bill Cusworth - Map making, registrations, control setting, setup, and check-in

  • Mats Jansson - Setup, breakdown, pickup

  • Dennis Wilkinson - Setup

  • Andrew Peterson - Event Director, Course Setter

2018 NAV-X #5 - Pacheco - Results

The rolling grassy hills of Pacheco State Park are a great place to get out of sight of civilization. We hope you enjoyed the beauty of the place while exploring the many hills and valleys. Some folks even caught a glimpse of a bobcat!

2018 NAV-X #4 - Lake Tahoe - Results

2018 NAV-X #4 - Lake Tahoe - Results

Aaaah!  Tahoe in September hardly ever disappoints, and this year was no exception.  135 map trekkers were greeted by clear blue skies and crisp morning temps, ideal for adventure in the woods and mountains of Donner Summit.

Course setter Mats Jansson had tried hard to make sure no one would clear the 6h course, but due to permit restrictions mere days before the event, was forced to remove 5 controls from the course.  This was enough for Dennis Wilkinson to get all remaining 52 controls with 7 minutes to spare. He continues to impress all of us with his skill and speed. On the 3h course, local orienteer Greg Walker took the win with an impressive point score - he got well over half of the controls in just 3 hours.

RESULTS HIGHLIGHTS

Highest scores on the 6 hr course:

1. Dennis Wilkinson - 3584 points
2. Marc Triquell - 3060 points
3. Lubomir Sebo - 2640 points

2018 NAV-X #3 - Big Basin - RESULTS

2018 NAV-X #3 - Big Basin - RESULTS

We had a great turnout at our 3rd event of 2018, May 19th at Big Basin State Park. The drive in was foggy, cold and wet, but down in the basin the weather stayed dry and pleasantly cool all day. Everyone seemed to enjoy the courses designed by Misha Kreslavsky. People achieved great scores and came back on time (mostly) having gotten a great taste of the deep redwood forest. Full results are posted at the links below, congratulations to our winners and everyone who had a good run!

2018 NAV-X #2 - Las Trampas - Results

IMG_0064.JPG

We couldn't have gotten any luckier on Sunday with the timing of our event, getting to enjoy a beautiful day in Las Trampas before the late afternoon rain hit us.  The conditions enticed a lot of first timers who got a chance to enjoy some spectacular views along Calavares Ridge, and had some encouragement from Kyle Peter who set out to help and take photos.  Visit our facebook page to find more event photos (Link to Facebook Album).  To those of you who ventured further, you no doubt were challenged by this parks steep terrain, and Gavins 48 controls.  We had our biggest turnout in NAV-X history, with 127 map trekkers showing up.

We had some very impressive performances in all of the categories; congratulations to everyone who raced well, or had fun! Full results for Las Trampas can be found here (please e-mail us with any corrections: info@navxchallenge.org):

2018 NAV-X #1 - Briones - Results

2018 NAV-X #1 - Briones - Results

Aaaah!  The coastal range in the spring - does it get any better? Short grass, no pricklies and green, green, green (OK, so the poison oak can be bad, but we will ignore that fact for a moment).  We were blessed with a completely rain free day, overcast skies and low wind which made for near-perfect running conditions.  This showed in some of the results with a notable standout performance by newcomer Loren Baker who cleared the tough 4-hour course for the win.

BAOC’s Joe Grant event the day after clearly kept some of the usual suspects away, but we had a lot of new faces join us, and by most accounts, a good time was had by all!  87 participants on a rain-threatened season opener is pretty good.  We hope to see everyone return (and then some) at Las Trampas on Sunday April 15th for the second installment of the NAV-X Challenge Series.

Heidi Cusworth set a fun and challenging course for both 2 hour and 4 hour divisions.  There is no shortage of hills at Briones, and the well-stocked food table was reduced to crumbs by the hungry mob returning from their hilly map adventures.  Now for the results.

Results Highlights

Highest scores on the 2 hr course:

  1. 1130    Daniel Sebo
  2. 1030    Greg Khanlarov
  3. 980    Takashi Sugiyama (Tac Solo)
  4. 820    Lori Hubermann (Presto!)
  5. 740    Eric Rosenzweig

Top five on the 4 hr course:

  1. 2340    Loren Baker
  2. 2210    Charles Triponez (Team Bones)
  3. 2140    Joshua Wiley
  4. 1900    Lubomir Sebo
  5. 1870    Marcy Beard

A few volunteer recognitions are in order.  Special thanks to the 2017 NAV-X Challenge Series winner (Masters Male) Roy Malone, who was not able to compete, but instead went out and collected ALL controls on Sunday.  With all the equipment on top of the full 4 hr course, that makes for a big day - thanks Roy!  Huge thanks also to the following people (in no particular order) without whom this event would not have been possible:

Vicki Woolworth - Permit & Insurance, check-in, breakdown
Heidi Cusworth - Course design
Dennis Wilkinson - Course setting, check-in, beginner clinics and breakdown
Bill Cusworth - Registrations and results
Kyle Peter - Setup, raffle prizes, breakdown
Mats Jansson - Event director, check-in, food, breakdown
Andrew Peterson - Website
Bob Cooley - Map printing
